Atlanta Arsenal Set The Atlanta Arsenal in Atlanta, GA was a major supplier of materiel to the Confederate Army. It produced both ammunition, accoutrements and materials. In 1863-64 the Atlanta Arsenal employed nearly 5,500 men and women. A good western Confederate impression should always contain a set of Atlanta accoutrements. The Atlanta Set Includes Cartridge Box utilizes the imported British cartridge box finial. The black square flapped box has two tins, shoulder and waist belt loops. Optional tool pouch. It is theorized that the tool pouch may have been dispensed with in favor of saving leather. The theory being that only sergeants were issued boxes with tool pouches. Remember this is a theory only. (Specify with or without tool pouch) Cap Box is copied from an original specimen It is marked on the outer flap with the diminutive Atlanta Arsenal stamp. The turned brass finial is shaped distinctively and is specially made for this item. Atlanta Waist Belt and Rectangular Plate The belt comes complete with a Rectangular C.S.A. cast brass belt plate. Send your waist measure over your uniform coat. Shoulder Belt this narrower shoulder belt fits the Atlanta Cartridge Box the best. It is a Confederate shoulder belt, cut slightly narrower than the U.S. version. Bayonet Scabbard while you may combine any of our Confederate Scabbards with the Atlanta Arsenal set. However, it is rumored that Atlanta produced a scabbard not unlike that made in Richmond that had a lead ball in the tip. Remember, hearsay isn't documentation. The Richmond Scabbard has a lead ball in the tip and comes with this set. If you prefer another scabbard please specify which one you want with your set. The C. S. Arsenal At Baton Rouge At the time Louisiana seceded from the Union on January 26, 1861, the United States Arsenal at Baton Rouge had been in the hands of state forces just over two weeks. By the Spring of 1861 the arsenal was under control of the Confederate government. Richard Lambert, Military Store Keeper, was in command and was assisted by Capt. J. C. Booth. Through the spring and fall of 1861 Lambert and Booth purchased about 3,000 sets of Accoutrements from the New Orleans firm of Magee, Horter & George. With an eye towards augmenting these supplies, Lambert, in May and June of 1861 purchased 76 sides of bridle leather as well as sixteen saddlers stitching horses. The C. S. Arsenal likely remained in operation until the fall of Baton Rouge on May 28, 1862. During its brief operation it supplied ordnance stores and ammunition to Confederate troops at Pensacola, Florida. In addition distinctive sets of accoutrements were produced utilizing a waist belt with a fork tongue frame buckle. |
