Confederate Knapsack

Confederate Knapsacks
Our Confederate Knapsacks are faithful reproductions of original knapsacks. Years of research and study of many original examples have gone into perfecting our historically correct reproductions. The hardware is faithfully reproduced to match original hardware. We do not use poorly made mass produced hardware. The knapsacks are made of only the best material and leather to exactly match original examples.  The bags have fine hand sewn details. We use only top grade leather sewn with waxed linen thread for our straps.

The one place we deviate from the original bags is the coating.
No, We Do Not Use Period Paint Recipes
YES! We use a latex base coating on all our knapsacks and haversacks.

Missouri Boot & Shoe Company made
a conscious decision not to use period paint due to fire and health hazards both to our ourselves and to our customers.  Boiled Linseed Oil is a main ingredient in “period paint recipes.” It contains lead, arsenic, beryllium, chromium, cadmium and nickel. These elements are toxins, carcinogens and teratogens.
Material treated with boiled linseed oil can spontaneously combust into flames even after it is dry.

The Isaac and Campbell Knapsack

Our Isaac and Campbell knapsack is a faithful copy of the originals. The original knapsacks were manufactured by the Isaac and Campbell
Company in London and brought into the United States by the
Confederacy.

Our detailed historically correct copy features hand sewn details and cloth herringbone twill tape ties that are used to close the fold pocket
on the knapsack. The russet leather harness is made of top grade leather and with historically correct 1 1/4 inch roller buckles.

The corners of the cloth bag are protected by bridle leather corner guards as were the original knapsacks. The leather harness is colored with
a period dye giving it a rich russet color. The bag is coated with the same non-toxic coating as all our knapsacks and haversacks.

Upon request we will stamp the white cloth inside the bag with one of the Isaac and Campbell markings found on examples of originals. Since some do not want the marking on their bags we do not put the stamping on unless requested to do so.

How do our knapsacks survive the test of time?

You be the judge.

Check out this 35 year plus old bag still in use today.

One of our Double Bag Knapsacks still going strong at age 35. But you must care for your bag and not abuse it if you want similar results
These pictures are of a bag we made over 35 years ago!

It was sent in a few years ago
for some repair work by one of our valued customers. He reported using it heavily over the years and just wanted to get it "dressed up" to use many more years.

The Knapsack is STILL in use in the field today going strong.
