All our Cartridge Boxes are custom made here in our shop in Neosho. They are hand sewn with hand waxed linen thread and made of top grade leather. The period finish is hand applied to finish out the box. Each box is a faithful copy of its original counterpart right down to the makers marks. Our in house graphic design team has painstaking recreated each makers mark in great detail. We make unmarked as well as marked cartridge boxes. Unmarked boxes were common in the Pattern 1857 version. If you prefer unmarked, just let us know. If you are representing particular theaters of operations and would enjoy copies of specific makers productions, I have listed separately those that we reproduce. Each box comes with tins. These are museum quality boxes suitable for use in reenacting, museum exhibition and for collectors of a dying art form. I have made and collected cartridge boxes and cap boxes since 1972. We will trade for original cartridge boxes, cap pouches etc. Contract us for details.

Pattern 1857 Boxes
The Pattern 1857 Pattern Boxes are the early-war Federal contract boxes generally found without makers marks and with un-rivited belt loops. Some boxes were made with the belt loops spaced widely apart per the New York Arsenal pattern. The Allegheny Arsenal set had the belt loops centered under the shoulder belt loops.

Pattern 1861 Cartridge Boxes
The Pattern 1861 Boxes were the wartime contract boxes with rivited waist belt loops. Federal contractors were required to mark their products. Production began in July 1862. However some of the Pattern 1857 items made after Nov. 1861 reflect the rivits in the waist belt loops as there was something of a transitional period. The .69 caliber smoothbore boxes went out of production in February 1862. Following that date, when smooth bore arms were issued the .69. rifled musket box was issued. When necessary, cartridge boxes were issued on the basis of if the ammunition fits, use it.

Western Contractor: J. B. Sickles St. Louis 1861 Cartridge Box At the outbreak of the Civil War, J. B. Sickles was a well established St. Louis firm. Originally located at 509 N. Main Street, Sickles manufactured all types of horse tack as well as selling saddlery hardware. Sickles produced at least 10,000 sets of infantry accoutrements during the Civil War. Incorporated in 1882 the company continued in business well into hte 1940's. Our reproduction Sickles Cartridge Box is copied from an original that featured extensive use of waxed flesh leather in the latch tab, tool pouch, as well as waist and shoulder belt loops. The use of waxed flesh leather is indicative of the leather shortages create by war-time demand. The original box is believed to have been issued to a Kansas soldier. J. B.
