Leather Care Instructions

Why Spend Money On Leather Care Products?
Dirty leather gear and footwear may be cool to youthful re-enactors looking to have that "hardened campaign" look but the seasoned reenactor knows the value of clean leather gear and footwear.

When dirt and barnyard acids are
allowed to stay in leather it speeds up it's demise. Never put grease or oil over dirt it seals it in to the leather and will damage your leather gear and footwear.

When kept clean leather products will
last longer, feel and look better.
Leather gear can have repairs made and hardware replaced to prolong it's serviceable life span. Footwear can have new soles and heels put on them instead of having to replace the footwear. New soles and heels are a fraction of the cost of having to completely replace mistreated footwear.

Proper care of footwear and leather gear saves you money and makes for better looking and longer lasting products to maximize the years of service you will receive for your investment.

For best results  follow all five of  these steps
after each event.

How To Care For Leather & Footwear

Step 1

Keep wet or damp footwear away from heat or open flame.  Do not leave in hot vehicles or lay out in direct sun to dry. It doesn't take long to heat the leather to the point of embitterment.

Allow
leather to dry naturally and slowly.  Do not allow leather to mold or mildew by leaving in plastic tubs, vehicle trunks or other poorly vented areas. Spread your leather out in a cool dry space and allow to dry naturally with no more then an electric fan to circulate room temperature air to speed up drying.

Note: Using shoe care products  may cause lighter leathers to darken some but failure to clean and use leather care products greatly reduces the "life" of your leather gear and footwear.

Step 2

Before applying grease or wax you must clean your leather.  Brush off dry loose dirt and then clean footwear uppers and most other leather gear with Saddle Soap, following container directions. Allow footwear and leather gear to dry to naturally before applying grease and or wax. Never put wax or grease on dirty leather it will only trap in harmful particles and cause premature damage to the leather. (Saddle soap can darken some lighter colored leathers

Step 3

Huberd's Shoe Grease
Leather needs its natural oils and greases replenished.  Use Huberd's Shoe Grease after each cleaning.  Follow the directions on the container.

You should work the grease into
clean, dry leather and allow to soak in. Use a cloth or your finger tips to work the Huberd's Shoe Grease into your leather using circular motions.  Allow to soak in before you apply products such as Lincoln Stain Wax.

If applying to leather parts that will be in contact with your uniform always be sure and wipe off extra grease and wax before using the leather gear again.

Step 4

Next, put on a good coat of Lincoln Stain Wax and it will help restore the color and provide protection  and shine.

Do not over apply but put on a nice thin coat and and allow to dry until slightly hazy.

And as always with leather products read and
follow directions on the container.

Step 5

Finally, use your Wooden Handled Natural Horse Hair Brush to smooth down waxed flesh leather  and buff to a soft shine or to put a glossy shine on smooth out leather.

After applying the wax if you spray a fine mist of water on top of the leather it will help you achieve a better shine. Don't over do the water.
You want to just lightly mist the surface so you can get a real "spit shine" going on your leather gear and footwear.
