1861 Pattern .58 Caliber C. S. Storms Cartridge Box and Cap Box Combo
The Pattern 1861 C. S. Storms .58 caliber Rifled Musket Cartridge Box is wartime contract box with riveted waist belt loops but is also designed to be used with a Cartridge Box Shoulder Belt. It has a tool pouch on the front to hold a cleaning kit and removable tins to hold and protect the black powder and paper cartridges used in the rifled muskets.
The accompanying Cap Box that was issued with the 1861 .58 Caliber Set was the New York Arsenal style. The Cap Box closing tab is not sewn on but was made as a continuation of the leather flap that fastens over a brass finial to keep the Cap Box closed. The Cap Box is lined with lambs wool to help keep the percussion caps inside. Each box also had a standard issue cone pick made of spring steel which could be used for removing debris stuck inside the percussion nipple.
