J. B. Sickles Pattern 1861 .69 caliber Rifled Musket Accoutrements Set
J. B. Sickles - St. Louis
The Pattern 1861 .69 caliber Rifled Musket Cartridge Boxes made by J. B. Sickles was a wartime contract box with riveted waist belt loops. It was also designed to be used with a Cartridge Box Shoulder Belt. The Cartridge Box has a tool pouch on the front to hold a cleaning kit and removable tins to hold and protect the black powder and paper cartridges used in the rifled muskets.
The J. B. Sickles Contract Set unlike the other 1861 Western Contractors has the New York Arsenal style Cap Box with the closing tab not sewn on but made as a continuation of the leather flap that fastened over a brass finial to keep the Cap Box closed. The Cap Box is lined with 100% natural lambs wool to help keep the percussion caps inside. Each box also has a standard issue cone pick inside which was used for removing debris stuck inside the percussion nipple on the gun.
